Moss, used as a ground cover, can create a feeling of being surrounded by a lush and ancient space. Mosses have become an attractive feature of Japanese gardens starting in the late 1800’s. In many areas outside of Japan, however, face challenges growing moss as the climate conditions do not create a favorable environment for mosses to thrive. Included is a short list of some of the alternatives successfully implemented in the North American Japanese Gardens.
