A critical issue for our field is training the public garden and environmental leaders of tomorrow. Educational institutions, such as college and university gardens, are uniquely poised to become leaders in this area. Through the Learning by Leading Program, university students are given structured opportunities to grow their leadership skills to tackle important environmental issues. While they are making real changes to convert the university into a climate-adapted campus through physical projects and educational programs, they are gaining confidence and experience to make a significant impact in public garden and environmental fields after they graduate. Our goal now is to help other organizations use models we have developed and apply them to their own internships to increase the impact of these leadership students across the country and beyond. In this workshop, participants will hear details about joining this Learning by Leading Network and setting up internship programs that foster leadership and impact. Participants will learn from two other institutions that have started pilot Learning by Leading-inspired internships and the steps necessary to start their own.
