Presented by the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Community

This presentation was originally presented at the APGA 2025 Annual Conference: Elemental.

The Heronswood Garden in Washington State is widely known for its rich landscape filled with rare plants collected around the world by founder Dan Hinkley. In 2012, the garden was purchased by the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, and is the only tribally-owned public botanical garden in the country. Join Garden Tribal Liaison and Tribal member Debby Purser as they explore how Heronswood has adapted and learned from its new community. We’ll show the ways in which our landscape and plant collections have changed, follow the development of the S’Klallam Connections Garden, and discuss our funding as we strive towards financial sustainability.

Speakers:

  • Debby Purser, Tribal Liaison, Heronswood Garden
  • Dr. Ross Bayton, Garden Director, Heronswood Garden
