Design thinking is a useful framework for working through any number of challenges public gardens face. Design thinking is a dynamic process that goes through four basic steps and provides us with techniques like developing personas, creating experience maps, and evaluating user experience to help us more deeply understand our audience. These techniques will help you better understand your target audience's issues/needs, create a visualization of how these issues may be addressed, and then observe actual visitor behavior to ensure that your garden's resources are easily accessible to your target audience and meeting their needs.
