Job Description
The Volunteer Program Coordinator oversees the Charleston Parks Conservancy’s Volunteer Program. At the heart of the Conservancy’s programming is the excellent experience of our volunteers, which allows the Conservancy to fulfill our mission of inspiring the people of Charleston to connect with their parks and together create stunning public spaces and a strong community.
About Us
We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization with a mission to inspire the people of Charleston to connect with their parks and together create stunning public places and a strong community. The Conservancy secures 90% of the funding required to maintain 26 parks, gardens and trails across the city through private and corporate donations. The Conservancy provides year-round park care, focusing on strategic seasonal plantings, major park revitalizations, sustainable maintenance and piloting innovative uses of public land to serve those most in need in our community.
Duties & Responsibilities
Volunteer Program Management
Creates and maintains a volunteer handbook, including policies, procedures, and standards of volunteer service.
Creates and maintains a volunteer request process for use by staff to request and schedule volunteers.
Creates and maintains volunteer service job descriptions for each type of volunteer activity.
Develops a plan for volunteer recruitment to fulfill the Conservancy’s volunteer needs, including individuals and corporate groups.
Plans volunteer stewardship and recognition events.
Ensures the database is used to log volunteer data such as contact info, hours, dates, types of service, and waivers. Ensures waiver and emergency contact information is audited and updated annually.
Creates reports for management and board meetings from the database.
Evaluate the volunteer program to ensure effectiveness and make recommendations for changes as necessary.
Represent the organization at community events to promote volunteer opportunities.
Ensures regular communication with Conservancy staff including:
Events, Horticulture, and Education departments to establish and coordinate volunteer requirements and needs for events, park projects, and community programs.
Attend and manage volunteers at all signature events (Shucked and Sauced, Teddy Bear Picnic, Picnic for the Parks, Party for the Parks, Light the Lake)
Development department to publicize volunteer recruitment and volunteer opportunities, market the overall volunteer program, and meet the volunteer needs of development and marketing divisions.

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree required and Volunteer Management Certification or equivalent experience.
3 years of experience in business, preferably volunteer coordination.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
Strong organizational and multi-tasking abilities.
Excellent communication skills; able to communicate with and relate to a wide array of individuals.
Ability to plan and manage projects with little supervision.
Ability to be self-motivated, work independently, and meet deadlines.
Task-oriented and strong attention to detail.
Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and database management.
Valid Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation.
Ability to have a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends.
Additional Information
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job the employee:
Will spend a large majority of time walking, standing, and bending.
Will be exposed to hot or cold temperatures, outside weather conditions.
May be required to lift and /or move up to 20 lbs. regularly.
Will experience a moderate noise level in the work environment.
Require work in a normal office setting where time is spent working on a computer.
SCHEDULE
This position is full-time (40hrs/wk), non-exempt. The schedule will vary weekly depending on the needs of the organization and volunteer opportunities.
COMPENSATION
$45,000/yr paid bi-weekly
