Job Description

Chanticleer supports a horticulturist to study at Great Dixter in East Sussex, England and at Chanticleer in Wayne, Pennsylvania. This one-year Scholarship includes 11 months at Great Dixter and one month at Chanticleer, providing an opportunity to develop practical skills and the ‘sense of place’ needed to manage complex, innovative gardens.

This training opportunity was established to inspire a future generation of top-notch North American gardeners. Qualified applicants will have completed horticultural training, be looking for an immersive experience to advance their knowledge of plants, design and organizational excellence, and be U.S.

The scholarship is named in honor of Christopher Lloyd who lived and gardened at Great Dixter and established close ties with Chanticleer.

Duties & Responsibilities

The scholar works at Great Dixter from September to July 2020, immersed in all aspects of the garden’s operations. The individual will also attend symposiums and visit gardens, plant trials and garden shows. The final month of the scholarship is spent working at Chanticleer. The scholar may also wish to complete an internship at Chanticleer prior to beginning at Great Dixter. They will receive a bursary from Chanticleer to cover their living costs while in the UK. Accommodation is provided at both gardens for the duration of the scholarship.

Education and Experience

This training opportunity was established to inspire a future generation of top-notch North American gardeners. Qualified applicants will have completed horticultural training, be looking for an immersive experience to advance their knowledge of plants, design and organizational excellence, and be U.S. citizens.

Successful applicants will have:
– Previous horticultural training and work experience
– Qualifications, including vocationally relevant qualifications
– Interest and motivation to work in the sector
– Skills that the placement would develop or enhance
– A desire for self-development and their own goals

Scholar Eligibility
Applicants must be eligible to work in the USA and England and be at least 18 years of age.

Applications will be accepted through November 1st. The selection committee will consider all applications equally. Interviews will be held virtually on December 2.
