Job Description

Are you ready to lead at one of the nation’s most iconic public garden organizations? As an Associate Director, you’ll partner with others in senior leadership to ensure excellence in garden management, operations, and program delivery across the Smithsonian’s diverse gardens and greenhouse facilities. At Smithsonian Gardens, your leadership will help shape the future of nationally prominent public landscapes, supporting spaces that connect people to plants, history, and culture.

About Us

Smithsonian Gardens, part of the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, extends the Smithsonian’s museum experience in a public garden setting with over 180 acres of outdoor gardens including 15 public exhibition gardens, plus interior displays. Living collections include a tree collection, a nationally accredited orchid collection, and a display collection.

With a collaborative, forward-thinking staff, Smithsonian Gardens engages people with plants and gardens, informs on the roles both play in our cultural and natural worlds, and inspires appreciation and stewardship.

Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:
Promoting stewardship of living plant collections and the public gardens spaces
Developing performance goals and using them to evaluate work performance of subordinates
Managing horticulture operations in relation to intense urban pressures and heavy visitation, with over 24 million visits per year to gardens on the National Mall.
Developing and executing rapid-response protocols for extreme weather events, large-scale public demonstrations and security incidents that impact the Smithsonian Institution’s outdoor footprint.

Education and Experience

You will be evaluated in the following areas:
— Ability to apply horticulture management expertise in leading multi-disciplinary teams.
— Ability to direct, plan and accomplish the work through others.
— Ability to balance horticulture management with visitor experience.
— Ability to apply expertise in emergency management techniques.
