Job Description

The Morris Arboretum & Gardens of the University of Pennsylvania, located in scenic Chestnut Hill, is seeking an experienced Plant Propagator to support our renowned living collections. This full-time position is responsible for producing a diverse range of woody and herbaceous plants for research, public display, and institutional programs. The role requires technical expertise in propagation, exceptional record-keeping, the ability to meet production goals, and the capacity to guide part-time staff, interns, and volunteers.

About Us

The Morris Arboretum & Gardens of the University of Pennsylvania—one of America’s oldest and most respected arboreta—is located in the beautiful Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia. The Arboretum maintains extensive living collections and is home to a 10,000-square-foot greenhouse complex and a ½-acre field nursery.

The University of Pennsylvania, the largest private employer in Philadelphia, is a world-renowned leader in education, research, and innovation. This historic, Ivy League school consistently ranks among the top 10 universities in the annual U.S. News & World Report survey. Penn has 12 highly-regarded schools that provide opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and continuing education, all influenced by Penn’s distinctive interdisciplinary approach to scholarship and learning. As an employer Penn has been ranked nationally on many occasions with the most recent award from Forbes who named Penn one of America’s Best Large Employers in 2023.

The University offers a competitive benefits package that includes excellent healthcare and tuition benefits for employees and their families, generous retirement benefits, a wide variety of professional development opportunities, supportive work and family benefits, a wealth of health and wellness programs and resources, and much more.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Plant Propagator is responsible for propagating and cultivating plants to support the Arboretum’s collections, displays, research initiatives, and distribution programs. Key duties include maintaining accurate propagation and production records, sourcing plant material, and meeting production targets in collaboration with horticultural and research staff. The role also involves supervising part-time staff, interns, and volunteers in nursery operations, implementing the integrated pest management (IPM) program, and coordinating plant procurement and distribution for Arboretum staff and the annual member dividend program. Additional responsibilities include operating and monitoring greenhouse systems and the historic fernery, providing educational lectures or demonstrations when appropriate, and performing occasional weekend work along with other assigned tasks.

Education and Experience

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or a related field and three or more years of experience in plant propagation and nursery production. Experience in a public garden setting is highly desirable.

Additional Information

Additionally, candidates should possess strong teaching and writing abilities, with proficiency in operating machinery considered a plus. A valid driver’s license is required, and candidates must be able to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s License upon employment. Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and perform tasks that involve walking, standing, and stooping for extended periods.
