Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is hiring a Gardenshop Manager!

The mission of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is to inspire meaningful connections between people and nature and to promote plant conservation through horticulture, education, and plant science. Gardenshop supports this mission by extending our reach beyond the physical bounds of the campus and into the larger world, providing our guests with a thoughtfully curated collection of ethically sourced and sustainably produced goods that, whenever possible, uplift our vibrant community of local makers, especially those most impacted by inequity.
The Gardenshop Manager recruits, trains and mentors shop team members, whose work is to further articulate messages from our horticultural, educational and plant science initiatives, using our collection of ethically sourced and sustainably produced goods as a vehicle. They oversee all daily functions of our onsite retail shop, assisted by team leaders to ensure seven-day management coverage, enriching the guest experience while generating meaningful financial support for the Gardens and our community.

$60,000 – 64,000 salaried, exempt

This is a full-time, year-round, benefits eligible position with a schedule of 40 hours a week. Additional time may be needed outside these hours for interviews, scheduling, and other administrative tasks, and especially during Gardens Aglow, which requires additional flexibility.
Physical Requirements:
This is an active job on a large campus requiring up to eight hours of standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, bending and reaching up. Some lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds and the occasional use of a stepstool to retrieve stock may be necessary. This job requires standard visual acuity and the ability to operate a POS system and a PC with or without accommodation.

Duties & Responsibilities
-Recruit, train, and mentor an exceptional team of storytellers, interpreters, educators, and salespeople to administer the daily operations of the retail shop.
-Ensure proper coverage, meet budgeted payroll costs, and get the job done through skillful scheduling, attentive timecard oversight, and solid task- and team-management.
-Meet sales goals by communicating them clearly to the team and by fostering a collaborative group dedicated to understanding what our guests seek and helping them discover it.
-Maintain the shop to the high standards of CMBG visually and environmentally, providing an excellent guest experience while keeping the floor properly stocked and working to prevent loss.
-Act as a key conduit for information between the Gardenshop management team and the floor staff, and between Gardenshop and the Gardens as a whole, channeling information in all directions, including guest feedback to the buying and management team.
-Ensure the sustainability of Gardenshop’s work by helping to establish and maintain a system of documented standard operating principles and procedures that are scalable and repeatable.
-Participate in Gardens-wide initiatives including Gardens Aglow assignments.
Education and Experience
-Three years of work history, life experience, and/or coursework recruiting, training, and managing teams of people engaged in guest service; proven leadership abilities; retail management experience preferred.
-Experience managing budgets, payrolls, and schedules needed; accurate cash handling skills essential.
-The ability to learn new technology and a working knowledge of the MS Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel; some experience with POS systems helpful.
-Must like people, be adaptable, and have excellent communication skills; we work in a fast-paced and stimulating environment.
-Commitment to working across the organization to support the integration of IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) principles into the Gardens’ internal operations and its relationships with visitors and guests.
