This internship prepares you to enter the field of environmental or museum education by providing hands-on experience with interpretation, informal education, insect rearing, and demonstrations in a public garden setting. In particular, the intern in this position will immerse themselves in interacting with visitors in the Native Butterfly House, the Learning Apiary, and the Native Bee Hub, assisting with beekeeping and rearing butterflies, and providing informal education to the public. This internship allows one to learn how the Education Department leverages the incredible resource that is our landscape and gardens in a wide variety of learning modes and settings to serve our diverse customer and visitor base.
Full-time, hourly, $16 per hour
Mid-May through Late-August 2025
Intern housing is available for a biweekly rate

Physical and environmental factors:
This position has consistent, moderate physical demands. The position frequently involves hands-on garden education. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, often in inclement weather (hot, cold, wet). The employee should be prepared for active physical work as a regular component of the workday throughout the Gardens’ open season.
Work schedule:
40 hours/week, including one weekend day from approximately mid-May to late August. Flexible start and end date. The successful candidate is responsible for their own transportation to and from the workplace.

Duties & Responsibilities
-Learn the art and science of live interpretation in a public garden setting.
-Build proficiency in educating on entomology in a botanic garden setting as well as other topics including botany, environmental science, and horticulture.
-Provide live interpretation to guests at our Native Moth & Butterfly House, Discovery Carts, and Learning Apiary.
-Support Entomologist and Educator in care of live insects in Native Moth & Butterfly House and Learning Apiary, including things such as caterpillar rearing, beehive monitoring and garden maintenance.
-Assist in surveying insect populations to help document biodiversity present at the Gardens.
-Work closely with volunteers and trained docents.
-Learn and deliver best practices in guest experience, science communication, and visitor engagement, especially in regards to contemporary environmental issues.
Education and Experience
-Must enjoy and be comfortable socially engaging with the public.
-Demonstrates efficient organizational skills.
-Ability to work in a fast paced, teamwork environment.
-An interest in environmental issues, plants, nature, and the outdoors, and a desire to learn more about the role of education in a public garden and museum setting.
-Some coursework/experience in the field of education, entomology, plant science, botany, biology, environmental sciences or a related field.
-Experience using databases and spreadsheets is preferred.
-Commitment to working across the organization to support the integration of IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access) principles into Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens’s internal operations and its relationships with visitors and guests.
