Job Description

The Ed Fehnel Horticulture Fellowship Program offers an enriching opportunity for aspiring horticulturists to immerse themselves in the world of public horticulture for 12 weeks in the summer. Nestled within the 152-acre cultural campus of Newfields in Indianapolis, Indiana, this program provides a unique blend of education, hands-on experience, and career exploration.
Students will rotate among our horticulturists, Fairbanks Park, Madeline F. Elder Greenhouse, and grounds staff to experience the hands-on skills needed to maintain a public garden.

About Us

Newfields is a 152-acre campus near downtown Indianapolis. It hosts major exhibitions in the Indianapolis Museum of Art, popular public events such as Winterlights and Spring Blooms, a seasonal Beer Garden, pop-up culinary experiences, classes, programs, and tours.

Duties & Responsibilities

Our students work closely with our seasoned horticultural professionals to maintain and enhance The Garden and natural landscapes throughout Newfields. They experience skills and concepts including plant care, landscape design, plant identification, irrigation, volunteerism, tree health, and more.

Education and Experience

Successful candidates will be a current or recent student focused on Public Horticulture, Botany, Plant Science, Landscape Architecture or related fields. We seek candidates that are passionate about plants and have a clear desire to pursue a career in the green industry.
