Job Description
The Ecological Horticulturist at Jenkins is responsible for the care and maintenance of both cultivated garden areas and natural landscapes, including a meadow, floodplain, bioswale, and mature woodlands. The ideal candidate will work in alignment with Jenkins’ distinctive horticultural approach, prioritizing sustainability and a commitment to environmental stewardship.
This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, non-exempt position. Work is primarily performed in the daytime during weekdays, with some occasional work necessary in the evenings and on weekends for special events or seasonal duties. This role assists with the supervision of seasonal interns, Hamilton Horticulture Apprentices and a dedicated group of weekly volunteers. The Ecological Horticulturist is part of the Horticulture Department and will report to the Director of Horticulture/Curator of Plant Collections, and work under the direction of the Head Horticulturist.

Duties & Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities for this role include:
Public Gardens Management (40%): Complete garden and grounds tasks such as mowing, mulching, pruning, weeding, and planting, with direction from the Head Horticulturist. In the absence of the Head Horticulturist, act as the field lead for apprentices, interns, and other student staff. Support seasonal tasks such as leaf blowing, snow removal, and storm cleanup.
Natural Areas Management (40%): Lead ecological restoration efforts such as invasive species management and replanting. Lead a weekly Conservation Volunteer crew to work in natural areas. Coordinate and lead corporate, student, and other community volunteer groups as needed. Organize and maintain all necessary equipment.
Education and Public Programs (5%): Prepare and teach on-site workshops for Interns and Apprentices. Assist in occasional public programs such as teaching workshops, leading tours, and writing articles.
Complete other duties as needed. (5%)
Education and Experience
Demonstrated experience working in a professional, public horticulture environment with an understanding of care for perennial and woody plants, especially plants native to the eastern United States.
Ability to operate and maintain hand-tools and small machinery such as mowers, weed whackers, snow blowers, lawn tractors, and skid steer.
Ability to safely operate and maintain a chainsaw (or ability to obtain use and safety training within one year of hiring).
Current Pennsylvania pesticide applicator’s license (or ability to obtain within six months of hiring).
Experience in project management with ability to provide clear communication to staff and volunteers.
Organized with excellent attention to detail and follow-through to accomplish measured results.
Proficiency with basic computer software such as Microsoft Office.
Work well with others and show courtesy and respect to colleagues and visitors.
Valid driver’s license.

Working Conditions: This position requires long periods of walking and standing, with frequent bending and stooping in various terrain. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and work in all kinds of weather conditions.
