The Longwood Fellows Program is a prestigious, residential, bespoke leadership program dedicated to developing the next generation of public garden leaders. With a global applicant pool and an active Society of Fellows comprising approximately 200 alumni, the program offers unparalleled opportunities for growth and impact in the field of Public Horticulture.
We are seeking a visionary and strategic leader to serve as the Director of The Longwood Fellows Program. This role is crucial in advancing the development of future leaders in public gardens, overseeing the program’s strategic direction and delivery, and ensuring an exceptional experience for Fellows. The Director will manage a team including 4 to 6 Fellows annually, a Fellows Administrative Assistant, and adjunct Faculty.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Strategically lead the development and delivery of The Longwood Fellows Program, ensuring it meets world-class standards
- Oversee curriculum development and delivery, actively manage and coach Fellows, and ensure quality through evaluation and feedback
- Collaborate with global partners for field placements, and represent Longwood Gardens both locally and internationally
- Contribute meaningfully to the Engagement and Learning department in setting the strategic vision for education at Longwood Gardens
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal teams, external partners, public gardens, and faculty
- Lead the recruitment process annually and guide the selection committee
- Ensure the safety and well-being of Fellows during their residency
- Prepare and manage the annual Fellows budget and related projects in a fiscally responsible manner
- Act as an ambassador for Longwood Gardens and the Fellows Program, representing the organization locally, nationally, and globally
- Lead the design, development, and execution of new programming identified in our strategic plan to further support a pipeline of talent in public horticulture
Education and Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in Public Garden Administration, Horticulture, Nonprofit Business, Cultural Leadership and management or a related field
- A minimum of 5 years of leadership and administrative experience in a cultural institution or higher education
- Proven experience managing students, curriculum, faculty, partnerships, travel, and collaboration with diverse partners
- Demonstrated leadership with clear decision-making abilities, a keen eye for quality, and experience in budget administration
- Self-starter, collaborator, motivator, connector, and educator
- Ability to work both weekdays and weekends, including early/late hours as needed to support programs and events
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally
