Job Description

Maintain the tree, shrub, and vine layers of the Northeastern Arboretum, on the Boston campus, through systematic pruning and integrated pest management as part of an overall plant health care program for the living landscape. Perform specialty tasks such as cabling, bracing, and safe removals of trees. Maintain digital records of plant health assessments, removal inventory, and related storm damage.

The Arborists are permanent members of the NU Snow Team involving the removal of snow and ice from university and adjoining areas including roadways, walkways, and steps and parking areas. This includes and is not limited to plowing, shoveling, salting, and sanding using University snow removal equipment as necessary to maintain safety of pedestrians and vehicles.

Must possess demonstrated skills in:

• Aerial lift and chainsaw operation

• Tree climbing

• Tree removals

• Cabling and bracing

• Pruning

• Transplanting

• Identification and methods of control of pests and diseases using I.P.M.

• Snow removal

• Maintenance, repair, and safe and proper operation of various types of arborist equipment

About Us

Founded in 1898, the Boston campus of Northeastern University boasts 11 acres of green and growing space within a 72 acre, urban oasis. In 2019, Northeastern earned its status as a Level II Campus Arboretum with over 250 distinct species of trees in its inventory.

Duties & Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

•Pruning – Systematic pruning of tree canopy across the Boston campus. Shrub and vine pruning.

•Pest Management – Integrated Pest Management, tree health assessment reports.

•Database Management – Plant database management within Iris BG for such things as inventory updates, health assessments, and damage reports

•Operations – Specialty operations such as cabling, bracing, and tree removals.

•Other grounds related duties as assigned

Education and Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree required. Hiring preference for degrees in arboriculture, horticulture, or related field. A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the field of arboriculture or a related field is required. Exceptional experience as a climbing arborist may be substituted for the educational requirement. Must have and maintain a valid US State of Residence driver’s license and U.S. D.O.T. Medical Examiner’s Certificate. Must possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator’s License within three (3) months of employment. Within six (6) months of employment, must possess and maintain a Certification by the International Society of Arboriculture or equivalent. Must be able to perform manual labor, including frequent lifting/carrying/transporting loads up to 50 lbs. Required to work in all weather conditions in all seasons and essential staff for weather related emergencies impacting the grounds.
