BOISE, ID – January 7, 2026 – The Idaho Botanical Garden (IBG) is delighted to announce the appointment of Colin Lyman as its new Director of Horticulture. With a robust professional background in botanical and horticultural management, including experience as Associate Director of Horticulture at Houston Botanic Garden, Colin brings a wealth of expertise in sustainable garden design, collections management, and community-centered horticultural programming.

In assuming this new role, Colin has already made a significant impact by helping identify key themes for the new gardens that will be developed as part of the IBG expansion plan. This transformational project will introduce new educational gardens, a therapeutic garden – utilized for the new horticulture therapy program, an education arboretum, parking garden, a visitor and education center, and enhanced community gathering spaces.

Colin’s leadership will guide IBG’s horticulture team across five core areas of focus:

Connect Visitors to IBG’s Work and Passion for Plants
Colin is committed to enhancing the visitor experience by creating gardens and landscapes that educate, inspire wonder, and foster a deep appreciation for the natural world. He plans to develop interpretive signage, plant collection exhibitions, and immersive garden experiences that reflect IBG’s mission to connect people, plants, and nature.

Maintain, Improve, and Establish a Renowned, Inclusive Garden in the Mountain West
Recognizing the unique climate and ecological conditions of the Intermountain West, Colin will emphasize horticultural practices including plant selection, water-wise landscaping, and seasonal design that ensure IBG remains a vibrant, regionally relevant, and sustainable destination for all. This focus aligns with IBG’s long-standing values of respect for the land, inclusivity, and stewardship.

Build Diverse Sustainable Gardens and People
Under Colin’s direction, IBG will expand its commitment to ecological resilience by promoting native and water-efficient plant species, broadening plant collections, and establishing and enhancing garden areas that reflect biodiversity. He also intends to foster a culture of mentorship and education by supporting the growth and development of horticulture staff, volunteers, and community learners.

Prepare for Future Professional and Garden Growth
As IBG embarks on a major expansion and continues planning for future development, Colin will lead long-term strategic planning that includes resource management, vendor and contractor relationships, and thoughtful design and maintenance strategies. His leadership will help ensure that IBG grows responsibly while preserving the high standards of horticultural excellence that visitors expect.

Involvement in the Community
Colin believes in connecting the Garden to the greater Treasure Valley through outreach, collaboration, and community-oriented programs. He envisions IBG as a space where people of all ages and backgrounds can find belonging, wellness, education, and shared purpose through engagement with nature and plants.

Colin joins IBG along with his spouse, Abby Lyman, and their son. They are excited to become part of the Boise community and look forward to growing together with the Garden and its visitors.
“We are thrilled to welcome Colin and his family to the Idaho Botanical Garden,” said Erin Anderson, Executive Director. “His passion for horticulture, sustainable garden design, and community engagement will help us realize the full vision of our expansion and elevate the Garden to new heights.”
