Stewarding Island Treasures: Cultivating the Channel Islands Flora at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

Santa Barbara Botanic Garden has enjoyed a strong association with California’s Channel Islands, with researchers collecting herbarium specimens, writing floras, and bringing back seed for the living collection for over 70 years. As a result, today, we steward a remarkable collection of these plants in the Garden, the largest living collection of Channel Islands plants on the mainland. Our current goal is to further that work by maintaining and expanding our collections of these valuable species. In this talk, Christina will cover challenges with cultivating these plants in a garden setting, what makes these islands so special (botanically speaking), our garden’s experience with collecting wild material on the Channel Islands, and our ongoing relationship with Channel Islands National Park.

Cost: Free for Members (Non-members cannot attend and must join as a member in order to do so).
